Notes From A Therapist
By Hillary Volper, LCSW
How do we manage the care of our aging parents? There is no quick answer because each family is unique. We may be financially burdened by the responsibility, live with the stress of a broken healthcare system, or deal with the caretaking staff that needs managing.
Our feelings are like a roller coaster going up and down. There can be days when love and compassion emerge but then quickly morph to resentment, helplessness, guilt, and sadness. We are simply in the throes of grieving without even knowing. But what we do know is…that it is exhausting.
Effective ways to cope include seeking help from a therapist or a support group to help you normalize your experience. Some parents may be in a nursing home with round-the-clock care. Know that the social workers on staff will help you navigate the complex system of the facility.
No matter what relationship you have with your parents, know that your emotional stress is real, therefore make sure you have as much support from siblings as well as the outside community. May you all find ways to make your lives as easy as possible during this challenging period.
