Seekers Season Begins at Larchmont Avenue Church

BY PETER BYNUM, SENIOR PASTOR, LAC

In early 2025, Larchmont Avenue Church (LAC), 60 Forest Park Avenue, launched Seekers, a new community program designed to achieve three goals: to explore meaningful issues that are important in daily living; to discover, through critical conversations, new insights, patterns, and possibilities for health and wholeness; and to connect with friends and neighbors in new, life-affirming ways.

Through the winter and spring, four of these free public events were held, each of which created space for vibrant, participatory discussions on subjects like the status of journalism in today’s world, ways that brain chemistry is opening doors for at-risk children in our local schools, and how to reclaim hope and confidence in times of crisis.

Seekers will kick off for the fall at 8 PM on Saturday, September 6. LAC will welcome to its sanctuary the Emmy-award winning singer-songwriter, recording artist, educator, and activist Carrie Newcomer. In addition to performing some of her best-loved music from her 20 nationally-released albums, Newcomer will share stories from her life on the road, including her work as a cultural ambassador with the American Embassy of India and as an advocate for peace in Africa and the Middle East. Originally from Indiana, Newcomer has been described as a “prairie mystic” by The Boston Globe, as well as someone who “asks all the right questions” by Rolling Stone Magazine. Her low, resonant, and soothing voice, coupled with her progressive, informal spirituality, has been described by one observer as “rich as Godiva Chocolate.”

LAC is pleased to be able to present this concert free to the public. And, in keeping with the stated goals of Seekers, Newcomer will be available at a post-concert reception where the exploration, discovery, and connections can deepen.

The following morning, at 10 AM on Sunday, September 7, Newcomer will perform at LAC’s regular weekly service. Together with Douglas Kostner and our chancel choir, Newcomer will deepen and elevate our worship through word and song. And, after worship, all are welcome to stick around for the annual Block Party, when a section of Forest Park Avenue will be closed off for a time of good food, sweet treats, and a bounce house for the kids. Excitement is building in the church for this highly-anticipated weekend.

After this energetic kickoff, Seekers will continue into the fall with regular programming of monthly speakers, timely topics, and vital conversations. LAC elder Anthony Manson, who was instrumental in getting this new endeavor off of the ground, has high hopes for continued success. “Each month,” Manson said, “the Seekers series has not disappointed. The events have been uplifting and unifying, and they have created opportunities for deeper connection, inspired reflection, and personal growth. They are certainly worth making time for.”
