Mamaroneck Drainage Improvement Project Completed
The Village of Mamaroneck reported that major work on the Jefferson Avenue and Wood Street Drainage Improvement Project was completed in June, with only minor punch-list items remaining.
This important capital project was undertaken to address repetitive flooding experienced by residents of Wood Street and portions of Jefferson Avenue, impacting approximately 25 homes. The existing drainage infrastructure in this neighborhood had become undersized, damaged, and deteriorated, reducing the functionality of the storm sewer system and contributing to flooding during larger storm events, including the remnants of Hurricane Ida in 2021.
The $2.2 million project included the removal of existing stormwater infrastructure, re-lining of storm sewer pipe, installation of new storm sewer pipe, culverts, and other drainage structures, curb and driveway apron replacement, roadway paving, and curb restoration.
The Village anticipates that FEMA will reimburse 90 percent of eligible project costs, with the remaining balance funded through the Village Capital Budget. While this project will not eliminate flood risk, these improvements are expected to significantly reduce flood impacts in the neighborhood and improve the overall function of the local stormwater system.
The Village staff, Mayor, and Board of Trustees thank residents for their patience and cooperation throughout this project. Although the work took longer than originally anticipated due to winter weather and field conditions, including additional rock excavation, the project represents an important investment in the Village’s ongoing efforts to improve drainage, reduce flood risk, and strengthen local infrastructure.
