Town of Mamaroneck Awarded $1.25 Million Grant for Major Sidewalk and Drainage Improvements to Colonial Avenue
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced Transportation Improvements Program Funding, which includes a $1.25 million state grant that will help the Town of Mamaroneck improve pedestrian safety, particularly for children walking to school.
Town Supervisor Jaine Elkind Eney said that the funding from the State Department of Transportation will allow the construction of disability-compliant crosswalks and sidewalks, curbs, and drainage infrastructure improvements on Colonial Avenue between Weaver Street and Murray Avenue.
“We appreciate that Governor Kathy Hochul’s office recognized the importance of this high-priority municipal project,” Supervisor Eney said. “Colonial Avenue cuts through a residential neighborhood. It is narrow and busy, and its proximity to the Murray Avenue Elementary School compounds the pedestrian safety issues. It is heavily used as a route for both parents and children walking to and from the school, who must walk on uneven grass strips next to the road or on the edge of the pavement. The state funding will enable us to make meaningful and much-needed improvements.”
The grant will also pay for the installation of stormwater drainage system improvements. “Having the improved drainage infrastructure will benefit the entire area,” the Supervisor added.
Eney noted that the Colonial Avenue Pedestrian Improvement Project is consistent with the Town’s Comprehensive Plan by balancing “the mobility needs of people and cars by undertaking physical improvements to pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and enhancing transportation options and connectivity by expanding bicycle, pedestrian and mass transit infrastructure to improve access without using an automobile.”
Governor Hochul’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) focuses on transportation-related projects providing improved sidewalks, pedestrian and bike safety, enhancements to public transportation, and safe routes to schools for students and their parents. Mamaroneck was one of 13 towns statewide to receive grants in her recently announced TAP awards.
