Local Law Amended Regarding Playing Sports and Games on Village Streets; Short Form Environmental Assessment for Refurbishing Alma Field Reviewed

By Stephen E. Lipken

At their meeting on July 15, the Board of Trustees of the Village of Larchmont passed a motion to amend Local Law 207-5 to prohibit the playing of ball games or other games on Larchmont, Chatsworth, and Palmer Avenues and on Boston Post Road. Under the amended law, parents and others in custody or control of any children who play ball or other games on these streets will be held liable and subject to a penalty for each violation for the children under their supervision. Ball playing on other streets is permitted, but those playing must yield to approaching vehicles.

The Board then reviewed the Village’s environmental assessment form for refurbishing Alma Field. Construction is projected to begin after the end of fall sports in 2024. One million dollars in funding has been secured. The Flint Park Conservancy assisted with most of the fundraising for the refurbishment of Alma Field; other funding sources include Westchester County and the Village.

Police Lieutenant Joseph Paprota reported that police were alerted on June 20 that DeCicco’s Market on Palmer Avenue had what appeared to be a credit card skimmer attached to a checkout terminal. An investigation by the police department’s detectives is underway.

On Friday, July 12 a man received a security message on his wife’s laptop, requesting him to call a 1-800 number. He called the phone number, and an unknown person advised him to hand over $47,000 in cash because his Social Security number was compromised. Unfortunately, the resident complied and handed over $47,000 in cash to an unknown person who came to his home.

Fire Chief Richard Valentine reported that there was a fire at 2101 Palmer Avenue on Monday, June 8. Engine Number 35 and Tower Ladder 7 responded along with the police, the Department of Public Works, and the Building Department. The balcony sprinkler system was activated, and three dwellings were damaged.
