Extraordinary REALM Monument Unveiled on Juneteenth

Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Jaine Elkind Eney called the June 2 Board Meeting to order, reporting that she attended the Ninth Annual Hudson Valley Affordable Housing Summit at Pace Law School, creating a more inclusive affordable housing agenda.
“On Juneteenth, with local clergy and Town officials participating, an extraordinary monument will be unveiled in front of Town Center on Boston Post Road side, ‘Recognizing Enslaved Africans of Larchmont-Mamaroneck (REALM),’” said Eney.
“From May 21 to May 25 there were a plethora of Memorial Day events, all intended to honor our veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. There were ceremonies at VFW Post 1156, American Legion Posts 90 and 347. Each ceremony was very meaningful, providing important ways to pay our respects,” Eney observed. The Larchmont-Mamaroneck Memorial Day Parade was held on May 21.
The Board then convened as Fire Commissioners. For the month of May there were a total of 80 alarms, 68 fires, zero out-of-town mutual aid, 3 EMS calls; total number of personnel responding, 949; total time working, 44 hours and 18 minutes. The Fire Claims, certified by Fire Chief Alex Rapp’s Controller’s Payments is $3,293.51, approved by Roll Call Vote.
In Affairs of the Town, H2M consultants will appear at the June 16 meeting to discuss progress made on their stormwater project so far. Michelle Ballantyne was appointed as Senior Recreation Leader. Michelle has served the Recreation Board since 2012 and Hommocks Ice Rink since 2019.
A law was passed, authorizing side and rear yard setbacks for central air conditioning to be 5 feet.
Finally, Town Board accepted a generous donation of $900 from the Woman’s Club of Larchmont Philanthropy Committee to be used for Town Senior Center programming.
Supervisor Eney closed the meeting with a tribute to Burt Corwin, Vietnam veteran and former Commander of VFW Post 1156, who passed away on April 29. Burt’s leadership helped preserve the former VFW building for community use and played a significant role in establishing what is now the Town’s Senior Center.
