Flood Mitigation Update

The drainage improvement project on Wood Street and a portion of Jefferson Avenue is substantially completed. The Village of Mamaroneck’s contractors rehabilitated or replaced storm sewer infrastructure in the neighborhood, including drainage pipe, manholes and catch basins. The roadways in the project area were paved and curbs replaced. This $2.5 million project is mostly funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as part of post-Hurricane Ida disaster recovery. It was a difficult winter for the contractor crews performing this work, which delayed completion of the project.

 Facts and Figures:

• Removed approximately 427 linear feet (LF) of old and undersized storm sewer pipe

• Installed approximately 870 LF of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) storm sewer pipe

• Installed 760 LF of stormwater box culverts

• Rehabilitated approximately 330 LF of existing storm sewer pipe

• Removed 10 existing stormwater structures

• Installed 19 new stormwater manholes and catch basins

• Paved and installed curbs along approximately 1,262 LF of roadway

Catch basins are critical components of the Village of Mamaroneck’s drainage system and stormwater management program. Catch basins help collect surface runoff during rainstorms and snow melt and catch debris before it can reach underground storm sewer pipes.

To boost the Village’s flood prevention efforts, the Board of Trustees approved funding for an outside contractor to support Department of Public Works (DPW) crews. Due to that investment, an extra 300 catch basins were inspected and cleaned this year. This contractor support is in addition to the routine cleanouts DPW already handles. High-risk, flood-prone areas will continue to be monitored and cleared by DPW annually, and as-needed before and after major storms.

Residents can do their part to maintain this vital village infrastructure. Never put leaves or grass clippings, dog waste bags, trash, or other debris in a catch basin. This can not only reduce capacity in the basin and clog pipes but may also discharge waste and other contaminants to local waterways. Keep roadway catch basins grates clear and report excessive debris in a catch basin to the Department of Public Works or via the Village’s Support Center at https://complaints.vomny.net/.
