Affordable Housing Advocates Address Local Summit

At its public breakfast forum on May 10 conducted via Zoom, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Local Summit invited two experts in affordable housing to describe the tools currently available to communities to help address affordable housing needs.  Rosemarie Noonan, Executive Director of the Housing Action Council (HAC) in Tarrytown and Melissa Kaplan-Macey, Vice President, State Programs and Connecticut Regional Planning Association (RPA), shared their thoughts on how to make affordable housing happen.

New State of the Arts Learning Labs

As we look towards the month of June and the subsequent summer months, we are thrilled about the capital project work that will take place at four out of our six schools.  For now, though, I want to take a moment to share my excitement about a couple of the initiatives underway at Mamaroneck High School as a result of the community’s support of the 2019 capital bond.

LM Lions Donate 200 Pairs of New Eyeglasses to VHP

The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club donated 200 pairs of new reading glasses to the VHP (Volunteer Health Program). They will be used by the VHP’s worldwide eye-health missions.

Women’s Club Makes Welcome Home Kits for Furniture Sharehouse

At the Women’s Club Philanthropic lunch held in April, Kate Bialo, Director of Furniture Sharehouse, spoke about the organization’s mission to collect lightly used furniture from the public and redistribute it to economically disadvantaged individuals and families in the Westchester area, helping them to create a home where they can rebuild their lives.

Westchester Parks Foundation and Westchester County Parks Kick Off 2022 Bicycle Sundays Season

Westchester Parks Foundation and Westchester County Parks announced details for the 48th Annual Bicycle Sundays season for 2022. During this annual event, bicyclists, skaters, joggers and walkers will take over 6.5 miles of the Bronx River Parkway. The program kicks off on May 1 and continues every Sunday in May, June, and September – except Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

Four premier regional arts organizations  — Jacob Burns Film Center, Historic Hudson Valley, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival have joined together to announce an exciting new initiative: the Hudson Valley Summer Arts Pass. 

Town of Mamaroneck Resident Nicole Eustace Receives Pulitzer Prize in History

On Monday, May 9, winners of the coveted Pulitzer Prize – awarded for excellence in journalism and the arts in the United States since 1917 – were announced.  Prize recipients included local resident Nicole Eustace, a professor of history at NYU, who received a Pulitzer Prize in History “for a distinguished and appropriately documented book on the history of the United States.”

New Exhibit of Artwork by Students at the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Senior Center”

The Larchmont Public Library presents the 48th annual exhibit of artwork by the Larchmont Mamaroneck Senior Center artists. After a hiatus of 2 years due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the art class will be exhibiting work done this year. 

JCC Mid-Westchester Honors Larchmont-Based Nursery School Teacher

The JCC Mid-Westchester (JCCMW) honored Larchmont resident Donna DiFalco at it 2022 Spring fundraiser. Ms. DiFalco received the Heart and Soul Award for the 40 years of service she’s dedicated to the children who have attended the JCCMW Nursery School.

Cloud Wanderings of Wang Mansheng on View

The Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden is hosting a new exhibition of paintings and calligraphy in the Chinese tradition by Wang Mansheng that explore the spirit of the natural world and venture into contemporary meaning. Divided into three parts, the Cloud Wanderings show includes landscape paintings and calligraphy in Guild Hall, colorful paint-ings of lotus in the Hays Gallery, and a selection of album paintings and artist’s tools in the central Goelet Gallery.

LMC Media Announces New Board Officers

LMC Media has announced the election of the new officers who will serve as the leadership of the organization’s Board of Directors for the next year.  

CURE Hosts Book Club Family Event

CURE (The Coalition for Understanding Racism through Education) is offering a 5-week summer book club for kids ages 3-6 (pre-K to 1st grade) and their parents on Saturdays from 3-4pm at the Larchmont Public Library, 121 Larchmont Avenue on June 4, 11, 18, 25 and July 9.

Local Resident Publishes Book on Growing up in the Bronx

Robert Blaufarb, a Larchmont resident for 30 years, has just published a book called My Bronx, My Oz. He has written twenty short stories about growing up in the Bronx in the 1940s, 50s, and 60’s. The stories are poignant, happy, sad, all told through a childhood eye.

Cancer Support Team Honors Community Leaders at “A Celebration of Love & Hope” in Rye

For more than four decades, the Cancer Support Team (CST), headquartered in Purchase, has been enhancing the quality of life for multiple thousands of patients and families affected by cancer with such essential health services as professional nurse education and advocacy, social-work counseling, case management, cash, and other supportive services at no cost and without regard to insurance coverage at any stage of the disease. 

Design Gives Back Club Donates to Mamaroneck Counseling Center

Sydney Ruthazer, President and founder of the club Design Gives Back (DGB) at Mamaroneck High School, has launched her first thrift shop at the school for all High School  students.
