Larchmont Working to Resume Cleanup on Flint Park Fields

The Village of Larchmont is working daily with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to resolve the stop-work order issued for Flint Park in August, Village Attorney James Staudt stated at the September 28 meeting of the Village Board of Trustees. “Our plan is to use cleaner fill than what is there,” he explained. “Our engineers are working on a plan.”

Staudt’s comments were in response to resident Kristin Andersen, a member of the Coastal Zone Management Commission, who asked the board to provide an update on cleanup of Flint Park’s Fields A and B. The fields sit above an incinerator waste landfill, and DEC stopped renovation over concerns that excavation cracked the cap on the landfill. “There is toxic soil in the fields,” said Andersen. “Lead levels are above allowable amounts, and if not handled correctly, it could affect our health and the health of our children.” She urged the board to hold a public hearing on the project.

Staudt noted that soil testing is ongoing and permits needed to be issued before work can resume. “Our goal is to create a better, safer field than what is there,” he said.

In other business, Larchmont residents can look forward to a bigger, better Halloween celebration this year, said Recreation Superintendent Kyle Peterson. Larchmont’s Ragamuffin Parade, which has been a tradition for decades along with trick-or-treating at local businesses, will be held at 2:30 PM on Saturday, October 24. This year will include a haunted house, giant skeleton, giant witch’s cauldron and Halloween window painting. A trolley will connect participants from downtown Larchmont to Manor Park Beach for the Skeleton Scare on the Sound, which begins at 4 PM.

The Larchmont Day Fall Festival, originally scheduled for Saturday, September 26 was postponed because of heavy rain and strong winds. It will now be held on Saturday, November 14 in Constitution Park.

Several residents were appointed to local boards. Logan Morrow Macnee is the new member of the Parks & Trees Committee. Erik Marks is now a member of the Planning Board, and Brett Jureller is an alternate member of the Planning Board.
