Larchmont Police Chief McNerney Retires

The Village of Larchmont announced that Chief of Police Christopher McNerney retired effective August 29, capping a 32-year career in law enforcement. Lieutenant Joseph Paprota was named the new Chief of the Larchmont Police Department (LPD).

During his tenure as Chief, McNerney led a comprehensive modernization of the Department, professionalizing its operations and strengthening public safety across the Village. During the past four and a half years, under his leadership, the LPD and its members achieved the following:

• Statewide Accreditation: Earned New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation, placing the Department among roughly one-third of agencies statewide to attain this distinction.

• New Police Manual: Developed and implemented a comprehensive new Police Manual reflecting current rules, regulations, and modern law enforcement best practices.

• Body-Worn Cameras: Launched a department-wide body-worn camera program, fully supported through grant funding.

• Technology Modernization: Upgraded records and dispatch operations with a state-of-the-art Computer-Aided Dispatch and Records Management System, integrated with mobile data terminals, safety cameras, and in-car video recording — all grant- funded.

• Village-Wide Camera Network: Installed safety cameras throughout the Village and its parks to enhance public safety, fully grant-funded.

• Motorcycle Unit Restored: Re-established the Department’s motorcycle unit with two newly procured motorcycles, funded through grants.

• Communications Upgrade: Replaced outdated mobile and portable radios department-wide, also grant-funded.

• Officer Safety Equipment: Equipped all officers with new, safer duty firearms featuring smaller caliber ammunition, red-dot sighting technology, and mounted flashlights.

• Workforce Diversity: Doubled the number of Spanish-speaking officers and increased female representation on the force by 50 percent.

• Community Policing and Crime Reduction: Achieved all of the above while expanding community policing initiatives, increasing officer training, and reducing crime in the Village.

“These accomplishments reflect the dedication of every member of this Department,” said Chief McNerney. “I am proud of what our team built together — a safer, more modern, and more representative police department for the Larchmont community.” Chief McNerney’s law enforcement career includes 26 years with the Town of Greenburgh Police Department, where he was credited with modernizing the department and instituting numerous progressive initiatives, the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, as well as former President of the Westchester County Chiefs of Police Association.
