Fire Chief Valentine Speaks About National Fire Prevention Week and Fire Safety at the Village of Larchmont Board Meeting

At the Village of Larchmont Board meeting on October 21, Chief Richard Valentine spoke about National Fire Prevention Week, which was October 6-12 this year and was started by President Calvin Coolidge 1925. He told the Board that onsite education sessions were held at the Chatsworth Elementary School, Larchmont Avenue Church, and Nurtury Montessori School, as well as at the firehouse.

Chief Valentine added that his staff is diligently training on their new rescue equipment, including Vehicle Stabilization Devices, “commonly referred to as ‘struts’ and used during motor vehicle accidents when a car or truck is not on all four tires. It prevents the vehicle from shifting when it’s necessary to remove the occupants.

Chief Valentine also mentioned that residents have often told him that they are either reluctant or embarrassed to call 911, even though a legitimate emergency was taking place, and assured all that they should call 911 if they think there is an emergency. Also, now that temperatures are getting cooler, he cautioned anyone using a fireplace to make sure that it works efficiently. Blocked flues and carbon monoxide problems should be fixed, and smoke detectors should be installed.

The Board approved a resolution regulating parking hours in Lots 1 and 2 from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Also, since the licensed taxicab company in Lot 1 went out of business, space occupied by the cabs will now be converted to metered parking.

Another resolution approved by the Board authorizes the Administrator to use AKRF as a consultant for a Safety Action Plan. Finally, a Public Hearing was set for Monday, November 18 to amend Local Law to change “Parking Licenses” to “Parking Permits.”
